No one owes you anything

Cinderella, Aurora, and Rapunzel - we all grew up reading stories of damsels in distress being saved by Prince Charming.

The fairytale might be romantic and adventurous, but in the end, the hero is usually the Prince.

Yesterday, I watched the movie “Damsel” on Netflix. What I appreciated about the film was that it presented a contrast to the typical fairy tale storyline. “Damsel” portrays the story of a girl who is on the verge of living her fairy tale when she experiences a betrayal. The prince charming who is supposed to solve all her problems ends up endangering her life. She ends up in a dark place but realizes that she is the only one who can help herself.

Damsel also redefines the stereotypical relationship between a daughter and her stepmother. Lady Bayford, portrayed by Angela Bassett, is protective of her stepdaughters and wants the best for them.

The movie emphasizes the fact that nobody is obligated to help you with your problems. Be it your parents, spouse, or friends. You need to take care of them yourself, and you need to have the courage to do so. Today’s Cinderella can assert herself and fight her own battles to achieve her dreams.

When you realize that nobody is going to come to your aid, you must learn to help yourself.

Damsel is the kind of princess that young girls should look up to and learn from.

She is the hero of her own story.
